The shooting occurred in the midst of the Trump administration’s intensified deportation campaign. Mr. Araujo was killed on his way to work.
President Trump has recently reignited deportation efforts after a temporary slowdown. Ronaldo Salgado, Mr. Araujo’s son, described his father as a man dedicated to providing for his family and instilling strong values in his children.
Incident Details
ICE agents were initially looking for another individual. Federal authorities stated that ICE stopped a vehicle and attempted to arrest Mr. Araujo, who they labeled as an “illegal alien.”
According to an ICE statement released on Friday, Mr. Araujo allegedly hit an ICE vehicle and did not comply with orders, attempting to run over an officer. An ICE agent fired in self-defense, leading to Mr. Araujo being shot in the abdomen. He was taken to a hospital and died hours later.
A spokesperson for the Department of Homeland Security later clarified that Mr. Araujo was not the intended target; federal officers were searching for another person.
Eyewitness Accounts
Witnesses have challenged the official narrative. At the time of the shooting, Mr. Araujo was en route to a construction site. Three men were accompanying him, including his younger brother, Victor Hugo Salgado Araujo. These individuals remained detained in immigration custody in Conroe, Texas, as of Friday.
