Father Sentenced in Connection with Apalachee High School Shooting

Colin Gray, the father of Apalachee High School shooter Colt Gray, received a 15-year prison sentence. This decision followed a Georgia judge’s ruling, emphasizing Colin Gray’s failure as a parent by neglecting clear warning signs prior to the tragic 2024 school shooting.

Judicial Remarks

Barrow County Superior Court Judge Nicholas Primm handed down concurrent prison sentences. He expressed that the warning signals were increasingly evident. The judge highlighted Gray’s failure to restrict his son’s access to firearms or seek necessary mental health care.

The judge stated, “It is clear you failed as a parent.” This linked the severity of Gray’s actions to the son’s deeds.

A jury found Colin Gray guilty on 27 charges. These included second-degree murder and involuntary manslaughter. Prosecutors argued that he provided the AR-15-style rifle for the attack, against growing concerns regarding his son’s mental state. He stands as the first parent convicted of murder related to a school shooting.

Colt Gray had pleaded guilty to all 55 charges, resulting in a life sentence without parole. During the hearing, families of the victims urged the judge to impose the maximum sentence. The families shared the enduring grief caused by the events on September 4, 2024.

Shayna Aspinwall, widow of teacher Richard “Ricky” Aspinwall, shared her trauma. Raising their two daughters alone after her husband’s death, she emphasized the impact of his absence.

Shayna stated, “Our daughters must grow up without their father.” She described missed milestones and everyday moments that would be forever altered.

The court linked Colin Gray’s negligence to the tragedy. The judge noted he could have secured firearms, removed ammunition, or relocated the weapons while seeking help for Colt. Such actions might have prevented the event.

Impact and Aftermath

The tragedy at Apalachee High School in Barrow County resulted in the deaths of teachers Richard “Ricky” Aspinwall and Cristina Irimie, along with students Mason Schermerhorn and Christian Angulo, both 14. Nine others sustained injuries.

Prosecutors highlighted Colin Gray’s neglect of his son’s mental health issues, which contributed to the access of firearms. Gray became one of the rare U.S. parents criminally charged for a child-induced shooting, marking a precedent in Georgia.
