Federal Immigration Agent Shoots Man in Austin

1 week ago 0

A Sunday incident in Austin, Texas, involved a federal immigration agent shooting and injuring a man. Austin Councilmember Mike Siegel reported from the scene, noting that the man’s car displayed at least two bullet holes on the passenger side. Pictures taken at the scene confirmed the bullet holes.

Video provided by Siegel showed an uninjured person dressed in civilian clothes being handcuffed. The man who was shot is in serious but stable condition, as confirmed by Austin Mayor Kirk Watson during a press conference. He expressed regret over the incident. Councilmember Siegel emphasized the need for a thorough investigation and possible prosecution of any crimes committed by the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officer involved.

The exact circumstances leading to the shooting remain unclear. NPR’s request for comment to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) went unanswered. Community members gathered at the scene to protest, marking this event as the latest in a series of violent confrontations involving ICE agents.

Mayor Watson expressed his anger and frustration, noting this pattern of incidents has occurred in other cities such as Chicago and Minneapolis during large immigration enforcement operations by DHS. Texas has been actively collaborating with the federal government on immigration matters, with the Texas Department of Public Safety working closely with ICE since President Trump took office last year.

Congressman Greg Casar, representing Austin, called for an independent investigation, citing previous incidents where ICE’s narrative conflicts with video evidence. He referenced the shooting of Renee Good in Minneapolis, where video evidence discredited claims of Good attempting to run over agents. Casar demands transparency and accountability in response to Sunday’s events.

This recent ICE shooting in Texas marks at least the second such occurrence this year. In July, ICE agents in Houston shot and killed a Mexican national, Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, who was not the intended target of a warrant. Earlier in the year, Ruben Ray Martinez became the first person killed by immigration agents since President Trump’s second term began, occurring on March 15, 2025, in South Padre Island, Texas.
