Fever’s Cunningham Speaks Up on Wilson Incident

7 hours ago 0

Sophie Cunningham, known for her straightforwardness, recently shared her thoughts on an incident involving WNBA MVP and Las Vegas Aces star, A’ja Wilson. This episode took place during Game 2 at Gainbridge Fieldhouse where Wilson confronted a Fever fan. The fan had only pointed at her.

On the podcast “No Hesitation,” hosted by Cunningham and basketball trainer Drew Hanlen, Cunningham discussed the incident involving a controversial blocking call. “Oh my God! I have so many thoughts,” Cunningham expressed after watching a clip from the “Pat McAfee Show,” where another host confirmed the fan had merely pointed, stating, “The foul is on you.”

Cunningham withheld her immediate reactions on social media, preferring to discuss her views on the podcast. She criticized Wilson’s actions and the notion that athletes should attack fans for minor gestures. Cunningham, who has faced backlash for her views on gender in sports, emphasized the importance of treating fans better and appreciating sports fans, even when they express negative emotions.

Cunningham also opined that if Wilson’s actions were evaluated more critically, they might have resulted in a suspension — akin to how a star like LeBron James might receive leniency. Despite the incident, Wilson did not face suspension, ejection, or fines.

Additionally, Cunningham highlighted a double standard, suggesting former Fever guard and commentator Sydney Colson, along with analyst Theresa Plaisance, should face consequences for inserting themselves into the situation.

Cunningham remained firm in her stance, hoping Wilson would play to enhance the competitive nature of the game. She pointed out that the uproar over a fan’s gesture reflects more on the mental state of those involved than on the fans themselves.

The comments on social media reflected varied reactions to Cunningham’s take. While Cunningham continues to voice her beliefs unapologetically, her teammate Raven Johnson recently apologized to Wilson, emphasizing a more deferential approach.
