FIFA Investigates Spain-Argentina World Cup Final Clash

The Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) launched an investigation following a tense moment during the World Cup final between Spain and Argentina. The incident occurred as Spain celebrated their victory over Argentina, leading to a brief confrontation on the field.

Video footage of the incident captured Argentina’s Leandro Paredes appearing to shove Spain’s Eric Garcia by the throat. The altercation escalated when Spain substitute Gavi tried to intervene, resulting in Paredes pushing him to the ground. Additionally, Spain’s captain Rodri seemed to be struck in the stomach by Argentina defender Nahuel Molina as Molina ran past to join celebrations. Molina later confronted Rodri verbally, with former Manchester City teammate Nicolas Otamendi participating in the exchange.

Argentina’s coach Lionel Scaloni, along with several players, quickly acted to calm the situation. In response, FIFA issued a statement announcing that its disciplinary committee has assigned a Disciplinary and Ethics Prosecutor to explore possible breaches of the FIFA disciplinary code pertaining to the post-match events.

The statement did not specify a potential timeline for the investigation or mention Paredes directly, despite him avoiding a red card after the match. Paredes may still face suspension following the review.

In the tightly contested final, Spain secured the title with a 1-0 victory after extra time. Argentina was down to ten players when Enzo Fernandez received a second yellow card during stoppage time.

Notably, Argentina’s team chose to stand facing their own fans, rather than acknowledging the podium ceremony, as Spain lifted the trophy. This act was seen as disrespectful to the new champions, especially after Spain had honored Argentina with a guard of honor for the medal presentation.
