FIFA Reverses Balogun Suspension: U.S. Bolstered for World Cup Match Against Belgium

1 hour ago 0

The dynamics shifted for the United States after FIFA lifted the suspension of striker Folarin Balogun, previously banned from facing Belgium in the World Cup Round of 16. The U.S. team, which feared playing without its leading scorer, now faces a balanced contest.

With Canada and Mexico out, the U.S. fights to remain as the last host country in the competition. Following this decision, Kalshi’s ‘USA advance’ contract rose to 53%, up from past weekend figures in the 40s. On Polymarket, prospects for the U.S. stand at 39% for victory, compared to Belgium’s 34% and a draw at 28%.

Bookmakers adjusted odds following Balogun’s clearance. At DraftKings, the U.S. odds to proceed went from -115 to -140, similar shifts occurred at Hard Rock Bet from -105 to -120. Here, the odds for the U.S. winning in regular time moved from +180 to +155. A Hard Rock Bet spokesperson confirmed changes stemmed from the announcement.

FanDuel’s adjustment reflected the change, placing the U.S. at -122 to advance, reversing prior odds that favored Belgium due to Balogun’s earlier suspension.

American betting odds: Negative numbers show the amount needed to bet to earn $100, with larger negatives indicating stronger favorites. Positive numbers show potential returns on a $100 wager, with higher positives reflecting greater longshot status.

The Red Card and the Reversal

Balogun’s red card was issued during a U.S. 2-0 victory over Bosnia and Herzegovina following a challenge on Tarik Muharemović. Initially unchecked by Referee Raphael Claus, a video review later issued a red card.

Under FIFA regulations, Balogun faced an automatic suspension without an appeal option. Balogun believed a yellow card would have sufficed but accepted the decision.

However, FIFA’s committee reversed the decision by suspending the automatic match suspension’s enforcement for a probation period of one year. Former President Donald Trump applauded FIFA’s move, mentioning intervention in the decision process with FIFA President Gianni Infantino.

Reports suggest Trump, U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, and Andrew Giuliani lobbied for the reversal. They helped recruit legal teams to present their case to FIFA.

Belgium Protests FIFA Decision

The Belgian Football Association objected to FIFA’s ruling allowing Balogun’s participation. UEFA criticized FIFA for allegedly submitting to Trump’s pressure, arguing that such actions jeopardize the game’s integrity and competition credibility.

Sepp Blatter, FIFA’s disgraced former president, commented, asserting that political interference should not dictate red card reversals, which require rules and evidence.

U.S. coach Mauricio Pochettino distanced himself from the lobbying, affirming a stance against political involvement in sports rulings.

European Leaders Warn Against Political Interference

The issue transcended soccer, sparking warnings from European officials against political influence over sports decisions. A European Commission spokesperson highlighted the need for autonomy and transparency in decisions.

European Commissioner for Sport Glenn Micallef warned that political involvement could undermine sporting bodies’ autonomy. Belgium’s Foreign Minister Maxime Prévot expressed concerns over political involvement in FIFA’s decision-making process.

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s spokesperson emphasized that decisions should remain within football’s governing bodies.

USA vs. Belgium: Historical Context

The United States and Belgium have clashed seven times in World Cup history, with Belgium claiming six victories. The last U.S. win dates back to 1930. Their 2014 encounter ended painfully for the U.S., with Belgium winning 2-1 after extra time.

The Last Host Standing

Monday’s match carries significant weight as the U.S., the sole remaining host nation, faces established teams like Argentina and France in the round of 16. A loss would see North American hosts eliminated at this stage.

The game against Belgium is set for 8 p.m. ET at Lumen Field in Seattle, broadcast on FOX and Telemundo.
