In Powell, Ohio, a devastating incident resulted in the deaths of five people on the Scioto River. This tragedy unfolded when several individuals attempted to help a person struggling to swim.
Delaware County Sheriff Jeffrey Balzer explained at a Monday news conference that the group had gathered along the river in this Columbus suburb. Their intentions were recreational, possibly swimming, when a distressed swimmer triggered the span of unfortunate events.
‘That’s when the tragedy started to occur,’ Balzer remarked.
A motorist noticed a frightened child from the group running on a nearby road, prompting a 911 call, according to Balzer.
Efforts by rescue crews on Sunday led to the discovery of two women in the water. They were pronounced dead upon reaching a hospital. By Monday, Tracy Whited, a spokesperson for the Delaware County Sheriff’s Department, confirmed that the bodies of three men were also located in the river.
