Bright Angel Creek, located near the Phantom Ranger Station in the Grand Canyon, Arizona, experienced significant flash flooding on Saturday. The National Park Service (NPS) has requested public assistance to find up to 20 individuals who may be missing following the flood.
The flash flood occurred around 2:30 p.m., causing extensive damage to infrastructure in Bright Angel Canyon. Nearly all footbridges were destroyed, restricting access to the creek.
The NPS is seeking information from anyone who was in the Bright Angel Creek corridor on August 29. Those who had a campground reservation in the affected area are also urged to contact the NPS Investigative Services Branch. This includes people on the North Kaibab Trail, those staying at Bright Angel Campground, or individuals in the area known as “the Box” north of Phantom Ranch.
A large-scale evacuation effort took place on Sunday morning. A total of 62 individuals were removed from the area, with additional evacuations underway from Cottonwood Campground, Phantom Ranch, and nearby sites. Evacuees are being transported to Maswik Lodge Cafeteria on the South Rim, where the American Red Cross is providing assistance.
Closures are currently in effect for Phantom Ranch, Bright Angel Campground, the Phantom Ranch Canteen and cabins, and the North Kaibab Trail from the North Kaibab Trailhead to Phantom Ranch. Additionally, the Black Bridge and Silver Bridge, crossing the Colorado River, are closed with no reopening date stated.
The National Weather Service has issued a flash flood watch in the Grand Canyon area through Monday evening, anticipating more showers and thunderstorms. The agency indicated that flash flooding could occur in creeks, dry washes, swimming holes, and regions affected by recent wildfires. Hazardous currents are possible in narrow slot canyons and low-water crossings.
“Raging killer currents will be possible in side canyons and narrow slot canyons,” warned the National Weather Service.
For those with information concerning the situation, the National Park Service Investigative Services Branch Tip Line can be reached at (888) 653-0009 or [email protected].
