Flash Flood Emergency Declared in East-Central Indiana Amid Severe Rainfall

Thousands of people in east-central Indiana have been advised to find higher ground due to a Flash Flood Emergency issued by the National Weather Service (NWS). This alert affects Muncie and nearby areas following severe flooding caused by heavy rain.

The warning, shared at 10:17 a.m. EDT, pertains to Delaware County and will last until 4:15 p.m. EDT. Emergency officials reported that Muncie has already received 3 to 6 inches of rain, with the possibility of 2 more inches. The NWS stated flash flooding is in progress and deemed the situation ‘particularly dangerous.’

‘This is a FLASH FLOOD EMERGENCY for Muncie. This is a PARTICULARLY DANGEROUS SITUATION. SEEK HIGHER GROUND NOW!’ the flash flood warning stated.

Authorities caution that life-threatening floods could affect streets, underpasses, rivers, streams, and urban locales across the city. The warning covers Muncie, Yorktown, Chesterfield, Albany, Eaton, Daleville, Gaston, Selma, Ball State University, and the Prairie Creek Reservoir area. Residents have been advised not to travel unless evacuating and are reminded, ‘turn around, don’t drown’ if they encounter flooded roads.

Local officials communicated that flooding has already led to evacuations in sections of Muncie, with emergency responders assisting stranded individuals and flooded structures. Some neighborhoods on the city’s south side have been ordered to leave as rising waters persist.

Delaware County Emergency Management stressed on Facebook: ‘If significant flooding is approaching your home, consider evacuating now—before rising water makes it impossible to leave safely. Don’t wait until roads become impassable. Never drive through flooded roadways.’

The NWS categorized the flooding threat as ‘catastrophic,’ with intense rainfall expected throughout the afternoon.
