Florida International University Students Protest University’s Police Agreement

1 week ago 0

Leaders of Florida International University (FIU) recently signed an agreement authorizing its campus police to act as immigration agents. This decision has sparked a debate regarding whether more resistance should have been shown.

On September 19, during a gathering at FIU, a demonstration unfolded where many students expressed their dissatisfaction publicly. As the university’s president addressed the crowd, several students stood and unzipped their sweatshirts to reveal T-shirts emblazoned with the phrase “ICE off FIU” in bold red letters.

This episode is part of a broader examination of how American institutions are handling demands from President Trump’s administration. The series by The Washington Post, titled Fight or Fold: How American Institutions are Responding to President Trump’s Demands, highlights these ongoing challenges.

The students’ protest in Miami was a response to the perceived encroachment of immigration enforcement into educational spaces. Such actions have prompted discussions on the roles and responsibilities of universities in relation to federal immigration mandates.

“We want our voices to be heard and to ensure that our institution remains a safe space for all students,” said one of the protest organizers.
