Florida Man Accused of Assault Through Dating Apps; Authorities Seek More Victims

Palm Beach County officials are urging women to report any interactions they have had with a Florida man accused of using online dating platforms to meet victims. The request followed a sexual battery investigation at a Florida hospital involving Stephen Hakim, a suspect identified through DNA linked to the victim.

The Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office first addressed the situation in July, months after the initial complaint. The victim met Hakim on the dating app Hinge. Toxicology revealed sleeping drugs in her system, substances she did not consume willingly.

Hakim, residing in Delray Beach, faced sexual assault charges and was released on a $25,000 bond after pleading not guilty. Officials ask others who have met Hakim through such platforms to step forward.

Victim’s Account of the Incident

According to court documents, communication between the victim and Hakim started on Hinge before moving off-platform. The victim agreed to an evening outing, but the interaction changed when Hakim drove her to his apartment instead of a bar as promised.

The alleged victim described being driven at high speeds in Hakim’s Tesla and arriving at an apartment with minimal furnishings. After a few beers, she accepted an offered massage, only to feel excessively tired and unable to react. The woman reported an assault followed by manipulation from Hakim, who denied any wrongdoing.

Safety Advice for Dating App Users

Dating app use is widespread, with over half of adults aged 18 to 29 using these services. Although many create positive relationships via these platforms, criminal activity can occur. Experts highlight red flags, such as incomplete profiles and rapid attempts to shift conversations away from the app.

Megan Cutter from the Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network (RAINN) emphasizes online safety. Caution is advised when profiles lack detail or requests to exchange personal contact information occur quickly.

Prevention and Privacy Tips

Users should be cautious about sharing personal data. Using different images on dating profiles compared to personal social media helps prevent linking identities. Cutter suggests removing image metadata, which could disclose locations or other private details.

RAINN statistics show that women aged 18 to 24 face a higher risk of sexual assault. Reporting such incidents remains low, partly due to threats from perpetrators.

The Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office suspects further undiscovered victims and is reaching out for assistance in identifying more potential encounters with Hakim via online dating.
