A 21-year-old Florida resident, Gibson Nash, faces charges of first-degree murder after the discovery of his mother’s body. Margaret Chu Dufour, 56, a nurse, was found lifeless in her Polk County home, following a chain of troubling incidents.
The Polk County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to the scene, identifying Dufour as the victim. A month prior, deputies had visited the residence due to a disagreement between Dufour and her moving company, which attempted to increase charges. Sheriff Grady Judd noted that deputies assisted in completing her move, exemplifying their dedication to community service.
“That’s the kind of customer service our deputies do,” Judd emphasized during a news conference.
Events on July 21 escalated when Nash was involved in several car accidents using his mother’s blue BMW SUV. After fleeing an initial crash, he collided with multiple vehicles, leading to property damage and injuries to three individuals. Deputies located Nash unconscious in the SUV, bewildered by the presence of blood that appeared unrelated to the crash impact.
Nash was transported to a hospital, unidentified, sedated, and intubated. Meanwhile, deputies, suspicious of the circumstances, visited Dufour’s residence again. Finding no answer, they noticed a broken glass plate and a shovel near the entrance. Using a key found on the porch, they entered the home and discovered Dufour’s body.
The medical examiner reported that Dufour died from blunt force trauma and strangulation. Sheriff Judd described the murder as extraordinarily violent, contrasting with his 54 years in law enforcement.
Prior incidents in April revealed a pattern of threats from Nash towards Dufour. In Knoxville, Tennessee, Dufour had previously reported Nash threatening her with a knife. Despite those incidents, Dufour moved to Florida in an effort to seek mental health treatment for him.
Upon testing the blood on Nash’s clothing, investigators confirmed it belonged to Dufour. Painstaking bruising on Nash’s knuckles and feet suggested the extent of the attack. Additionally, Nash suffered from liver failure due to a Tylenol overdose.
Gibson Nash remains in custody without bail, and Sheriff Judd insists on his permanent removal from society, citing his blatant disregard for life and ongoing public threat.
