Former Haitian President Michel Martelly Returns for Rare Visit

Former Haitian President Michel Martelly made a rare return to Haiti on Wednesday. Despite not disclosing the reason for his visit, local reports suggest it may relate to the ongoing investigation into the assassination of former President Jovenel Moïse in July 2021.

Martelly served as Haiti’s president from 2011 to 2016 and resides in the United States. He was last in Haiti about three years ago for matters related to the same investigation. Authorities have not accused or charged him in connection with the case.

Upon his arrival, several dozen supporters greeted Martelly, celebrating his return with music and chants like “The father is back!” and “Long live Martelly!” They also held pictures of him. However, Martelly did not address any questions as he moved through the crowd.

Martelly selected Moïse as his successor. Both are part of the Tèt Kale Party (PHTK), which has significantly influenced Haitian politics. Despite this influence, the party did not register a candidate for the upcoming general elections, delayed for over a decade.

Martelly, known in the music world as “Sweet Micky,” has long faced corruption allegations. In November 2022, Canada sanctioned him, followed by U.S. sanctions in August 2024, accusing him of drug trafficking facilitation and gang sponsorship.

The U.S. Department of State remarked on the unacceptable actions of Haitian political and economic elites exploiting the country’s future.

In December 2025, the Council of the European Union imposed a travel ban and froze assets against Martelly and others. They accused him of aiding gangs to further his political goals and safeguard his interests. Haiti’s Anti-Corruption Unit also implicated him in misrepresenting assets. Martelly has yet to publicly comment on these allegations.

His visit occurs amid Haiti’s ongoing struggles with worsening poverty and increasing gang violence.
