Former NBA Player Royce White Plans to Enter 2027 WNBA Draft

Royce White, a former NBA player, has announced plans to declare for the 2027 WNBA Draft, stating that he identifies as transgender. This announcement follows a similar one made by Enes Kanter Freedom. White expressed that his identification as sometimes a woman is aimed at playing professional basketball.

White, known for his team-centric and versatile playing style, mentioned his readiness to support his future team. He highlighted his collegiate achievements at Iowa State University, where he led in all major statistical categories.

“The WNBA could make a definitive statement about males playing in the Women’s Association,” White said regarding his challenge to the league.

White emphasized his desire for fair treatment, identifying as a young Black potential U.S. Senator who seeks participation as someone who identifies with being transgender at times. He also expressed intentions to file a discrimination lawsuit if undrafted and unsigned by a team.

White, 35, has also engaged in politics, running in Minnesota’s Republican primary for the U.S. Senate. He previously contested against Democratic Sen. Amy Klobuchar but was defeated in the general election.

Enes Kanter Freedom also reviewed the WNBA’s eligibility criteria and believes he meets the requirements based on self-identification. However, the WNBA’s collective bargaining agreement specifies that only women are eligible to play, without defining the term or addressing transgender eligibility specifically.

The Women’s National Basketball Players Association on Friday highlighted its commitment to justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion in its statement on the broader issue.

White expressed interest in playing for the Minnesota Lynx, noting Coach Cheryl Reeve’s supportive stance on transgender inclusion. He affirmed his confidence, citing his physical attributes and previous basketball achievements.

He discussed plans to use the women’s locker room, affirming his determination not to face discrimination. White acknowledged the skill in women’s basketball, attributing respect due to personal connections and coaching experiences.

White claims he formulated his decision prior to Freedom’s announcement and sees potential collaboration with Freedom in the WNBA. The public declarations do not yet place White or Freedom in the WNBA Draft pool or guarantee selection or participation.

White seeks clarity on the eligibility parameters set by the WNBA and aims to challenge any criteria in court if necessary to achieve fair inclusion.
