One of the most notable moments during the Formula 1 Las Vegas Grand Prix weekend transpired during the first practice session. Carlos Sainz, then driving for Ferrari, struck a drain cover, causing significant damage to his vehicle’s floor and energy store. The mishap also affected Esteban Ocon’s car, who was then with Alpine. As a result, the session was red-flagged and ultimately canceled. This incident led to hours of delays while crews worked meticulously to repair the circuit and secure other drain covers.

Fan and Legal Repercussions

Due to the delay, thousands of fans departed before the next session began. In response to this mishap, attorney Steve Dimopoulos filed a class action lawsuit, arguing that the compensations offered were insufficient.

According to reports from The Las Vegas Review Journal, a federal judge granted preliminary approval for a settlement with LVGP and Liberty Media Corp., the parent company, amounting to over $3 million. Final approval is expected in November.

“The settlement establishes a $3.05 million common fund for holders of approximately 32,000 eligible tickets,” Dimopoulos stated to The New York Post. “Individual payments will vary depending on ticket type, participation rates, attorney’s fees, costs, and administrative expenses.”

The final amount each participant receives will depend on the number of claimants.

Race Continuation and Further Controversy

Despite the eventful practice session, the Las Vegas Grand Prix proceeded smoothly and is slated to continue as part of the F1 schedule through 2037.

The drain cover incident had further implications in 2023 when the damage sustained by Carlos Sainz’s Ferrari necessitated a new engine, incurring a ten-place grid penalty. This was particularly impactful as Ferrari was competing closely with Mercedes for second place in the championship standings.
