Francesca Hong and the Wisconsin Gubernatorial Race: A Progressive Stance

Francesca Hong, backed by the Democratic Socialists of America, is emerging as a leading candidate in the Wisconsin governor race. Her views on Thanksgiving have sparked controversy. A past suggestion to cancel the holiday has resurfaced, revealing her stance on colonialism and historical events that impacted Indigenous communities.

Hong’s comments, made in a November 2020 post, highlight her progressive perspective. The remarks have attracted attention online, drawing criticism and mockery from some quarters. Notably, her use of the term ‘folx’ has been pointed out for its inclusivity.

Hong is expected to secure the Democratic nomination. Her platform aligns with socialist policies, advocating for race-based grants and publicly funded services. She resonates with figures such as Zohran Mamdani, the New York mayor known for similar beliefs.

In earlier times, Hong faced criticism for a personal anecdote at a Culver’s restaurant. Her reaction to the presence of older white individuals was described humorously by commentators. Despite this, she advances in the political race, possibly due to her strong connections within the progressive sphere.

The primary race shifted as Mandela Barnes withdrew, leaving Hong and David Crowley as the primary contenders. Barnes’s exit was accompanied by allegations under investigation, further altering the dynamics of the contest.

Hong enjoys endorsements from national progressives like Rep. Ilhan Omar and Rep. Ro Khanna, amassing close to $709,000 for her campaign. In contrast, Crowley has raised $250,000 with local support.

The primary election is set for Aug. 11, with Gov. Tony Evers backing Crowley due to his experience. Hong’s campaign remains a focal point in this election, highlighting the distinct divisions within the Democratic platform in Wisconsin.
