On June 16, 2005, a severe storm caused the renowned Goodyear blimp, Stars and Stripes, to crash at the Coral Springs industrial park located on Sample Road. The blimp is a well-known sight at sporting events across South Florida.
Despite the crash, no injuries were reported when the blimp descended rapidly. The incident occurred near the Sawgrass Expressway, causing concern but no harm to individuals or property.
According to Chief John Whalen of the Coral Springs-Parkland Fire Department, this was considered a major event in the city’s history at the time.
