Texas often stands as a Republican stronghold, where GOP members seek political comfort. In 2024, President Donald Trump secured the state by 14 points, and Democrats have not achieved a statewide victory there in more than 30 years. However, Republicans are now concerned about possible losses in the upcoming November elections. For the first time, they are holding a midterm election party convention at the American Airlines Center in Dallas.
Despite Texas’s traditional Republican leaning, challenges loom. Notably, the Senate race between Republican Ken Paxton and Democrat James Talarico is now considered a close contest according to the Cook Political Report. Additionally, Governor Greg Abbott faces a tougher reelection battle than expected.
The GOP’s strategy to rally support in this Republican bastion mirrors the dilemma that prompted this unprecedented convention. Compared to treating snakebites with antivenom, the party is leveraging a controlled appearance of Donald Trump to counteract setbacks he has caused.
Can Trump Revitalize GOP Voter Engagement?
The event, dubbed a convention by the RNC, differs from traditional gatherings. It serves as a platform to highlight candidates and policies for the midterms, but lacks a formal nomination or platform approval process. Essentially, it is a celebration centered on the one individual not running for office this year.
Trump takes the stage at the convention, giving a keynote speech on each day, with the closing address reserved for Vice President JD Vance. Attendees have access to merchandise reminiscent of a 2024 Trump rally, including a $16 beer koozie featuring Trump as the Marlboro Man.
Trump has openly acknowledged the GOP’s challenge: voters are less motivated to support other candidates when he is not on the ballot. Speaking candidly, he urged supporters to imagine his name on the ballot to inspire participation.
Despite this, Trump began his term with an Ipsos approval rating of 47 percent, which has now dwindled to 33 percent. Among independents, the drop is more pronounced. Current voter preferences lean towards a Democratic congressional candidate over a Republican.
The high cost of living remains a critical issue. Diesel recently hit a record price of $5.85 per gallon, while gasoline is at $4.15 per gallon. The cost of crude oil has risen to over $100 per barrel. Trump’s management of economic issues, previously a focal point of his campaign, faces significant disapproval.
Trump’s Remaining Influence
Although Trump’s approval ratings are low among Democrats and independents, he still commands substantial influence within the Republican Party. Ipsos polling indicates 82 percent of Republicans support his presidency, despite a large portion of Americans believing the country is on the wrong path.
The midterm elections are more about turnout than popularity. For Republicans, the biggest concern is voter apathy. Some individuals dissatisfied with Trump may still support Republican candidates, even if not strongly committed to their choice.
Democrats remain unpopular as well, with 59 percent of Americans viewing them unfavorably. This situation suggests that many voters may choose to stay home instead of switching allegiance enthusiastically.
The Gamble of Relying on Trump
The GOP has bet heavily on Trump’s ability to engage voters. His presence could energize Republicans, while simultaneously reminding independents and Democrats of their disinterest in him. The outcome of this gamble will soon be apparent.
In the long term, the GOP must consider a future without Trump’s influence. As Trump ages, the party will need to strategize on how to mobilize voters without the unique draw he provides. The MAGA movement’s future rests on its ability to sustain itself beyond Trump’s presidency.
