The Democrats face mounting pressure as they enter this week’s Congressional Baseball Game at Nationals Park, carrying a six-game losing streak. The GOP is set to strengthen their team with the anticipated addition of MLB legend Mark Teixeira, which has increased tensions. Teixeira, renowned as a Texas Rangers and New York Yankees player, ranks 58th on MLB’s all-time home run list, boasting 409 home runs. Expected to secure a Congressional seat in November, his inclusion in the GOP lineup seems inevitable.
The Democrats, aware of the challenge, have devised strategies to counter Teixeira’s influence. Senator Ruben Gallego from Arizona expressed their intent to walk Teixeira whenever possible. He emphasized the need for a seasoned baseball player to join their side.
“We’re just going to walk him every time we have an opportunity,” said Gallego. “We need to draft a major league baseball player to come and play for us.”
Teixeira, although out of professional baseball for nearly a decade, is eager to re-engage with the sport. He has shared his enthusiasm about participating in the game, expressing a desire to defeat the Democrats both on and off the field.
Alongside Teixeira, starting pitcher Greg Steube from Florida will continue his streak of dominating performances. Known for his right-wing affiliation, Steube relishes the opportunity to outperform the Democrats during the match. His confidence is high following his historic home run in 2021, the first to clear the park in four decades.
Adding to the Republicans’ strong roster is Rep. Pat Harrigan from North Carolina. Harrigan, a Georgetown college baseball alumnus, made a memorable relief appearance in 2025 and has been instrumental in securing previous victories.
“Republicans have won the game five years in a row, and for some reason the Democrats keep showing up. See you tomorrow at Nationals Park as we go for six!” Harrigan remarked.
Despite the Democrats’ ongoing challenges, the games have benefited D.C. charities significantly. The 2025 event raised $2.75 million, with expectations that this year’s game will exceed that amount.
With Teixeira joining soon, Steube showing no signs of wear, and Harrigan’s youth and experience, Democrats confront the possibility of a prolonged losing streak. The GOP’s dominance is underscored by Rep. Roger Williams of Texas, who recently celebrated their 16-6 victory at Nationals Park.
While the Democrats face the uphill battle, the charitable impact of their defeats remains a silver lining for the community they aim to serve.
