On Tuesday, Kelly Ayotte, the Republican Governor of New Hampshire, successfully overcame her primary opponents. Her victory leads to a high-stakes general election against Democratic nominee Cinde Warmington, who faced no opposition in her party’s nomination process.
Ayotte defeated Shaun Fife and Bob Wayne McClory as she aims for a second-term as governor of the Granite State. She initially secured her position in 2024, defeating former Manchester Mayor Joyce Craig after the retirement of four-term GOP Governor Chris Sununu.
Ayotte has a noteworthy political career, previously serving as New Hampshire’s Attorney General from 2004 to 2009. She was elected to the U.S. Senate in 2010 but lost her reelection bid in 2016 to Democrat Maggie Hassan.
In 2024, Ayotte made a comeback with endorsements from Sununu after he opted not to seek another term. Her first term saw significant actions like rolling back parts of the state’s bail reform, signing laws restricting student cellphone use in schools, and increasing penalties for motorists refusing Breathalyzer tests.
However, Ayotte has faced disapproval from the left regarding state budget cuts affecting several state agencies.
Ayotte’s opponent, Warmington, has served two terms on New Hampshire’s Executive Council as the sole Democrat. Her role involved working alongside the governor to approve state measures and gubernatorial appointments. This marks Warmington’s second gubernatorial campaign, having lost in the 2024 Democratic primary.
Warmington criticized Ayotte for not adequately opposing President Donald Trump, particularly on healthcare cuts, tariffs, and the war in Iran. Ayotte, however, has largely avoided aligning herself with Trump, stating her allegiance lies with the people of New Hampshire.
