Growing Popularity of Golf Cart Tours in Rome Sparks Local Concerns

3 weeks ago 0

The bustling streets of Rome are witnessing a surge in golf cart tours, leading to significant backlash from local residents. According to data from Tripadvisor shared by the Associated Press, bookings for golf cart tours increased by 147% this summer compared to 2024. This rise in popularity is creating chaos, claim the locals.

Concerns Over Traffic and Parking

Critics highlight several issues stemming from the influx of golf carts. These include illegal parking, increased traffic, and larger crowds. Reports indicate up to 500 carts might now operate on Rome’s streets.

Supporters, however, argue that golf carts are quiet, occupy less space, and produce no exhaust fumes—helping preserve historic monuments.

Need for Alternatives to Public Transportation

Pauline Frommer, publisher of Frommer’s guidebooks, explained that Rome’s limited public transportation system creates demand for alternative modes of travel. She noted that subways get stalled by archaeological discoveries, spurring the popularity of golf carts.

“Into this void has come a fleet of golf carts,” said Frommer.

These small vehicles navigate Rome’s narrow streets, making them attractive to tourists covering more ground.

Regulating the Golf Cart Tours

Concerns persist about the overflowing number of carts. City officials are considering regulatory measures.

If granted, he intends to limit cart numbers, designate tour routes, and control operators. Patanè emphasized the need for regulation amid concerns over increased congestion.

Major cities globally struggle with overtourism while trying to maintain daily life for residents. Restrictions on short-term rentals and protection of historic sites are tactics adopted by many.

“In many popular tourist cities, visitors outnumber residents,” stated Frommer.

Limitations on golf carts could affect visitors with walking difficulties, underlining the debate over convenience versus chaos.

Mixed Opinions

The debate extends online, with opinions divided. Some Reddit users urge tourists without mobility issues to avoid golf carts.

“Rome is a living city, home to millions—not a theme park,” stated one user.

Conversely, others appreciate the tours as convenient sightseeing solutions.

The ongoing discussion reflects differing perspectives on how best to cater to tourists while safeguarding local life.
