Haiti entered the World Cup without much fanfare surrounding their games. Despite failing to secure a victory, they gained significant experience from their summer journey in North America. Their performance merits a closer examination.

Haiti was considered the second-worst team as they approached the World Cup. In Group C, they were seen as substantial underdogs against Brazil, Morocco, and Scotland, the latter being perceived as their most manageable challenge. Merely scoring a goal would have exceeded expectations.

Reality Versus Expectations

The official results might suggest that Haiti was stagnant at their pre-tournament ranking of 47. However, their gameplay told a different story.

Haiti displayed attacking and heartfelt soccer in all matches, regardless of the opponent’s skill level. They opted not to resort to defensive tactics or fouling to secure draws. Their belief in their capabilities allowed them to challenge strong teams like Brazil.

Despite losing all three games, Haiti demonstrated better play against Scotland, unsettled Brazil momentarily, and strongly competed against Morocco.
