Haley Stevens Backs Former Foe Abdul El-Sayed After Defeat

Michigan Congresswoman Haley Stevens recently spoke on ‘America’s Newsroom’ regarding her decision to endorse Abdul El-Sayed, her former primary opponent. After narrowly losing in the Democratic primary, Stevens emphasized the importance of respecting the voters’ decision.

Addressing Political Differences

Stevens stated, “That’s called democracy,” as she defended her choice to support El-Sayed despite their differing political views. She underlined the need to set aside personal grievances to unify the Democratic base ahead of the general elections.

Retiring Senator Gary Peters, who initially stayed neutral, has now shown support for Stevens. This move highlights the party’s efforts to counter El-Sayed, seen as a progressive competitor.

Stevens’ Moderate Stance

Throughout her campaign, Stevens was seen as a moderate, drawing distinctions from El-Sayed on topics like U.S.-Israel relations. Although the primary is over, she reiterated her identity as a “Zionist Democrat,” noting challenges faced by those with her political views in recent primaries.

She told co-anchor Bill Hemmer, “I believe in democracy. He won the majority of the votes, and I’m going to continue to stand by my positions.” Stevens also mentioned her endorsements by organizations like the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and the AFL-CIO, declaring herself a problem-solver who loves her country.

El-Sayed’s Progressive Policies

El-Sayed has gained recognition for his progressive policies. Despite rejecting the “socialist” label, he supports ideas such as ending ICE, ceasing U.S. military aid to Israel, and advocating for Medicare for all.

Stevens emphasized the distinction between El-Sayed and socialism, stating the Democratic nominee had firmly disavowed the ideology. “I think we all should. It’s dangerous,” she said.

Ultimately, Stevens identified herself as a “proud Democratic labor capitalist,” a key part of her political identity.
