New Initiative for Small Defense Firms

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and Small Business Administration (SBA) Administrator Kelly Loeffler have announced the formation of the Smaller War Plants Commission. This initiative aims to provide expertise and funding to support smaller defense companies.

Hegseth stated, “Our message is clear: President Trump is ending the era of dependence on foreign supply chains and our adversaries.” He emphasized the importance of backing businesses that supply military forces. The goal is to strengthen the industrial base behind the U.S. military.

According to the announcement, the commission aims to turn industrial capability into a battlefield advantage, thereby deterring conflict and preserving peace.

Historical Context and Mission

The new commission echoes the Smaller War Plants Corporation established in 1942. That entity supported small businesses in war supply production during World War II. It offered loans, contracts, and technical help. Loeffler mentioned a similar mission in her statement.

“Our joint mission will supercharge funding to those building our supply chain, tooling up, expanding, innovating, and hiring,” Loeffler said, highlighting an end to offshoring production.

Impact on U.S. Defense Industrial Base

Loeffler noted that small manufacturers make up 70 percent of the U.S. defense industrial base. The SBA manages nearly $500 billion in the small business portfolio. She credited President Trump and Hegseth for backing the world’s strongest military with an agile industrial base.

Ongoing Developments in Defense and National Security

Defense Secretary Hegseth commented on the impact of economic pressure on Iran. He did not dismiss the possibility of U.S. military resuming airstrikes if needed.

Other news involves a legal complaint against U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro for alleged violations when seeking charges against six Democratic lawmakers. The complaint requests an investigation by New York’s court system.

The USS Abraham Lincoln is scheduled for a port call after a lengthy deployment in the Middle East. This comes amid concerns about the impact of extended deployments on U.S. service members.
