On August 17, 2026, a commendation event took place in the Oval Office, where 16-year-old lifeguard Ryder Williams and 10-year-old Nathaniel Rai were honored by President Trump. This recognition followed a courageous rescue on July 25 in Santa Cruz, California, where Williams saved Nathaniel from a threatening rip current.

The dramatic rescue gained widespread attention as Williams, braving strong waves, successfully brought Nathaniel to safety. President Trump expressed admiration for Williams’ bravery and congratulated Nathaniel on persevering through the perilous incident.

We’re honored to have all of you. And again, what you did was incredible,

President Trump stated, addressing Ryder. He went on explaining the impact of the rescue video, noting his reaction of disbelief upon first viewing it.

Nathaniel’s father, Sumit Rai, was present during the meeting and expressed profound gratitude toward Ryder for saving his son’s life. Celebrating Nathaniel’s upcoming 11th birthday added further significance to the family, with Rai emphasizing their near-tragic experience and the timeliness of Williams’ intervention.

Maybe lifeguards don’t get the credit they deserve, President Trump remarked, appreciating the often-overlooked efforts of these skilled individuals.

Williams commented on the importance of relying on training during critical situations. He also shared his aspiration to pursue a career as a firefighter in the future.
