After experiencing a decade-long decline, participation in high school football is seeing an increase following the pandemic. This rise is attributed to various safety modifications implemented in the sport.
Coach John Hart, the head coach of Brownsburg High School, the defending Indiana state champion, notes a significant shift in how football practices are conducted. Unlike 15 years ago, current practices at his school do not involve tackling to the ground and typically do not exceed 90 minutes in duration. Hart humorously reflects that his older self might disapprove of these changes.
Though participation is on the upswing, a new study has emerged, bringing fresh concerns to light. While safety enhancements contribute to increased interest, ongoing research continues to evaluate the impact and effectiveness of these measures.
