Hilton Grand Vacations terminated an employee who sent a racial slur via social media directed at Chelsea Gray, a Las Vegas Aces guard. The incident happened after the team’s 109-75 loss to the Indiana Fever on Sunday. Gray, aged 33, shared the offensive message on her Instagram story. She remarked on the disbelief some people harbor towards athletes facing such abuse, saying the insult underscored the silencing attempt of athletes with the phrase ‘shut up and dribble.’
Hilton Grand Vacations released a statement confirming the dismissal of the employee responsible. Their conduct breached several company policies and was not representative of Hilton Grand Vacations’ values. The Aces have not provided an immediate comment.
Gray expressed gratitude for the supportive messages she received following the incident. An image of her playing for the Aces against Golden State Valkyries in June also surfaced, captured by AP photographer John Locher.
The WNBA signed a new collective bargaining agreement with its players’ union in March. The deal aimed to bolster security, enhance technological support, and strengthen mental health resources. Additionally, efforts included enforcing a robust fan code of conduct and launching an anti-hate campaign.
Despite these measures, online harassment persists. Courtney Williams of Minnesota Lynx reported hate messages accusing her of causing a prop bet loss. Similarly, Phoenix Mercury’s Alyssa Thomas received racial slurs and death threats after an on-court incident where her fist accidentally struck Caitlin Clark’s throat during a game against Indiana Fever.
Thomas criticized WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert for inadequate protection for players. During a press briefing in June, Thomas stated that neither she nor others noticed the incident while playing. Yet, in its aftermath, players faced unwarranted threats and were branded negatively. Thomas condemned this treatment and called for change.
Caitlin Clark and Fever coach Stephanie White denounced the hateful messages targeting Thomas, highlighting the toxic environment overshadowing the league. White criticized the racism, homophobia, and general unfounded animosity confronting players, asserting that such behavior is entirely unacceptable.
