House Approves Delay of Hemp Ban, Allowing Time for Industry Advocacy

4 weeks ago 0

The House has passed a short-term funding bill to delay the federal ban on hemp-derived THC products. This bill extends the deadline to Dec. 11, enabling industry groups to continue lobbying for regulation instead of outright prohibition.

The vote was 370-48, with 48 dissenting members comprising 19 Republicans and 29 Democrats. Earlier, the Senate approved the measure with a significant majority, and it now awaits the President’s approval.

The delay affects products like gummies and beverages containing hemp-derived THC, but does not apply to cannabinoids produced synthetically, which remain banned as of Nov. 12. The measure particularly helps cannabinoids such as delta-8 THC and delta-10 THC, which are often naturally derived from hemp.

“This extension gives us extra time, and we plan to use it fully to push for a regulatory framework that ensures consumer safety, prevents youth access, and provides certainty for our industry,” said the U.S. Hemp Roundtable.

Advocates for keeping the ban argue the need to prevent children from accessing synthetic THC products that are misleadingly labeled as hemp. The White House prioritizes addressing this issue in upcoming legislative sessions.
