House Ethics Committee Investigates Rep. Max Miller Amid Abuse Allegations

The House Ethics Committee has launched an investigation into Representative Max Miller of Ohio. This follows Miller’s request for a probe into domestic abuse allegations tied to his reelection campaign. The committee announced the inquiry, looking into claims that Miller may have been involved in domestic violence, abuse, or illegal drug use, potentially breaching congressional conduct codes.

The committee noted that the investigation itself does not imply any misconduct has occurred. Miller had indicated on social media that he would file for an ethics investigation to clear his name. “Given the renewed interest in my family issues, I will request an ethics probe into myself to clear these horrific accusations,” he stated. “I have nothing to hide.”

Miller is campaigning for a third term in the House amid challenges, including a contentious custody battle with his ex-wife, Emily Moreno. Moreno, the daughter of Senator Bernie Moreno from Ohio, accused him of violent behavior during their marriage, which ended in 2024 after two years.

Allegations in court records include claims that Miller threw hot water on Moreno, pushed her against a wall, and allegedly held a gun to her head. Additionally, Moreno alleges that Miller fractured their child’s collarbone. Miller has denied these accusations, referring to the water incident in a social media video as “horseplay.” He asserted, “I have never been physically abusive toward Moreno.” Regarding child abuse accusations, he stated, “I have never abused our daughter.”

Senator Moreno responded strongly on social media, criticizing Miller. He expressed concern for his daughter’s safety and questioned Miller’s suitability for public office, stating, “Max Miller fails any basic standards of character required to hold elected office.”

Despite the controversy, Miller aims to remain in the race for the northeast Ohio congressional seat. He has faced calls to withdraw as Republicans strive to maintain their narrow majority in the upcoming midterm elections. Miller’s previous victory in 2024 was by a margin of 15 points, but GOP officials fear the accusations may advantage his Democratic challenger, union ironworker Brian Poindexter, in the election.
