The House Judiciary Committee, led by Chairman Jim Jordan of Ohio, is intensifying its investigation into district attorneys within sanctuary jurisdictions. These areas are under scrutiny for alleged leniency towards illegal immigrants involved in criminal activities. Jordan emphasizes the potential use of subpoenas to obtain necessary documents if cooperation is not forthcoming from certain county prosecutors.
Jordan is particularly interested in how these district attorneys consider immigration status when handling criminal charges that are unrelated to the suspect’s legal status. In an interview, he remarked, “If we have to, we’ll use subpoenas to get documents that aren’t being provided. We follow a set process, requesting information and collaborating with their offices. If needed, we’ll issue subpoenas to uncover the facts.”
“We want to know the facts,” Jordan added, highlighting the committee’s commitment to gathering information.
One focus of the investigation is Steve Descano, the District Attorney of Fairfax County, Virginia. This jurisdiction recently gained attention following the murder of Stephanie Minter. The suspect, who entered the U.S. illegally from Sierra Leone in 2012, had been arrested over 30 times before the incident.
In 2020, Descano issued guidelines advising prosecutors to “consider immigration consequences where possible” during plea bargains, as reported by WTOP News. Fairfax County, a sanctuary area, does not require local law enforcement to cooperate with federal immigration authorities.
Jordan criticized these policies, saying, “This is one of the dumbest policies I’ve ever heard. Why should local enforcement not cooperate with federal enforcement on federal laws?” He pointed to the outcome of Minter’s case as a clear consequence.
Financial backing for Descano’s 2019 campaign came from the Justice and Public Safety PAC, which counts billionaire George Soros as a supporter. Fairfax County’s status as a major Washington, D.C. suburb adds another layer of concern for Jordan, due to its proximity to national security operations.
“That’s definitely a concern that I think probably any American with common sense would have,” he stated.
The committee is examining other sanctuary jurisdictions beyond Fairfax County, including New York’s Alvin Bragg and Philadelphia’s Larry Krasner.
The Department of Justice has accused Maryland of actively blocking deportations of illegal immigrants, further highlighting the tensions surrounding sanctuary policies.
