House Republicans Challenge Democrats on Socialism with Resolution

1 month ago 0

House Republicans are advancing two legislative measures, aiming to highlight Democratic positions regarding socialism within their party. The House Rules Committee recently approved a resolution condemning socialism, with no Democrats supporting its progression. Some Democrats criticized the resolution as futile, with Rep. Jim McGovern, D-Mass., labeling it as ‘nonsense,’ arguing that it does not address pressing issues like rising gas and grocery prices.

Rep. Joe Neguse, D-Colo., questioned Committee on House Administration Chairman Bryan Steil, R-Wis., on the definition of socialism, sparking a debate. Neguse challenged Steil about the potential involvement of President Donald Trump in taking a stake in Kroger grocery stores, to which Steil responded that he would need further details. Steil emphasized the need for a national security rationale for such actions.

The House-wide ‘rule vote’ for the resolution will occur on Tuesday, followed by a final vote Tuesday evening, according to a schedule obtained by Fox News Digital. The Republican effort also involves a vote on a constitutional amendment on Wednesday, aiming to cap the Supreme Court justices at nine, a move opposed by some top Democrats who advocate for expanding the Court.

House GOP leaders are accelerating the legislation, requiring a two-thirds majority for passage instead of a simple majority. Lisa McClain, House GOP Conference Chair, urged Democrats to take clear stances on these issues, emphasizing their role as leaders.

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, D-N.Y., avoided a direct response regarding his support for the anti-socialism resolution, citing its association with the SAVE America Act, which Democrats have criticized as voter suppression.

This resolution not only condemns socialism, but also endorses Republican-led election security measures like proof of citizenship and photo ID laws. It promotes the SAVE Act, passed by the House but pending in the Senate. Democrats have largely dismissed this legislation as suppressive.

Rep. Nick Langworthy, R-N.Y., highlighted the rise of socialism in New York, warning of its potential spread. He emphasized the impact of socialism and one-party rule, noting the increase in taxes, mandates, and government control.
