Earlier this year, Jasper Steinmetz walked a path in Austin, Texas, and noticed something unusual yet familiar—a man with an Indiana University athletic backpack. Steinmetz had graduated from Indiana University, which created an immediate connection. ‘I figured, you know, why not talk to him?’ Steinmetz shared with CBS News.
The man Steinmetz encountered was Sampson James, who was originally from Indiana and had been homeless for eight months. This meeting led Steinmetz to Google James and uncover his remarkable history. James was a four-star football recruit from Avon High School in Indiana, having joined Indiana University’s football team as a running back in 2019. He later transferred to Purdue in 2021, before briefly returning to Indiana University as a walk-on in 2023.
James was a standout athlete. However, his journey took a difficult turn. A severe knee injury and a diagnosis of bipolar disorder disrupted his career. He dropped out of Indiana University in 2023 without a degree, eventually losing almost everything except a cherished red school backpack.
Upon meeting Steinmetz, James found a fellow Hoosier who understood his situation. ‘He went to IU as well,’ James said of Steinmetz. ‘He was able to grasp and understand me.’ Motivated by their shared background, Steinmetz took action. He launched an online fundraiser, collecting $17,000 for James.
With these funds, Steinmetz helped James secure a home by prepaying rent and providing essential items for his new apartment. The transformation was profound. ‘Now that all these people donated and you got the apartment, they really want to see you succeed,’ Steinmetz informed James.
The encounter on the trail has led to a brighter future for James, a testament to the power of connection. ‘Oh yeah, and I’m big on not letting them down,’ James replied, embracing his fresh start with optimism.
