Hunter Welcing’s Resilient Journey in College Football

Hunter Welcing, a 2020 Lake Zurich graduate, has faced significant challenges throughout his college football career. He suffered two major knee injuries and struggled to advance on Northwestern’s depth chart at the tight end position. But as the 2025 season progressed, the 6-foot-3, 246-pound athlete started to make a mark with the Wildcats. After securing another year of eligibility through a successful petition, Welcing decided to transfer to Ohio State, a national championship contender.

Welcing expressed his anticipation about playing for Ohio State, especially considering their recent national title win after the 2024 season. His time at Northwestern was marked by limited play due to injuries and other setbacks. Welcing didn’t participate in 2020 and only appeared in five games later while redshirting in 2021. He tore his ACL for the second time in 2022, redshirted, and mainly played on special teams in 2023 and 2024.

A turning point came in the second game of the 2025 season. He made his first career touchdown catch in a victory against Western Illinois. This accomplishment was a culmination of his hard work and effort. He described it as a special moment, where his family was moved to tears. Welcing ended the season with 28 catches for 296 yards, achieving the most receptions for a Northwestern tight end since 2017, earning him an All-Big Ten honorable mention.

Despite considering leaving college for the NFL, feedback from scouts recommended further growth. They advised him that additional game footage would enhance his prospects. After New Year’s Day, Welcing entered the transfer portal and quickly received interest from Ohio State. The fit felt right to him and his family, leading to a swift decision to join the Buckeyes.

Leaving Northwestern was a heartfelt decision as he departed with bachelor’s and master’s degrees. He highlighted his eagerness to learn from top coaches and players, despite the emotional farewell. At Ohio State, Welcing quickly adapted, symbolized by the removal of the black stripe from his helmet on April 13. This event marked his acceptance and readiness for competition in the program.

Welcing’s journey is defined by overcoming challenges. After a torn ACL in high school, he fought to return, making a significant touchdown in a playoff victory. Coach Ron Planz of Lake Zurich commended Welcing’s character and perseverance. This early experience set a foundation for his approach in college.

Alex Spanos, Northwestern’s director of football sports performance, acknowledged Welcing’s perseverance. Spanos worked with him through injuries and weight training, highlighting Welcing’s resilience in adversity.

The upcoming match on Nov. 14 between Ohio State and Northwestern will be significant for Welcing as he faces his former team. Confidence in his abilities and a positive outlook drives him forward. He believes Ohio State offers unmatched opportunities to succeed at the next level.
