The individual shot by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent while delivering food for DoorDash in Austin, Texas, has been identified as Wilber Rafael Garces Perez. He is a 28-year-old Venezuelan.
The incident occurred before 1 p.m. local time near Anderson Square and Research Boulevard on Austin’s north side. Many details of the event are yet to be clarified. Chief Lisa Davis of the Austin Police Department confirmed that local police officers were not involved in the shooting.
During a news conference on Sunday, Chief of Austin-Travis County EMS, Robert Luckritz, stated that the individual was believed to have been shot once in the torso. He was transported to Dell Seton Medical Center within nine minutes of EMS arrival and was listed in serious but stable condition.
Garces Perez’s identity was disclosed by immigration attorney Kate Lincoln-Goldfinch. She informed CBS that he was working for DoorDash during the shooting. DoorDash confirmed Garces Perez was delivering food at that time. Lincoln-Goldfinch mentioned that Garces Perez contacted his wife from his car while in pain.
Garces Perez was released from Dell Seton Medical Center at the University of Texas on Sunday night and reportedly sent to ICE custody. Lincoln-Goldfinch told NPR that Garces Perez is married to a woman who has legal status in the U.S. She further told CBS that based on available information, Garces Perez had lawfully entered the United States. His current immigration status remains unconfirmed.
A Department of Homeland Security spokesperson referred to Garces Perez as an illegal alien in a statement to Newsweek. The spokesperson alleged that Garces Perez unlawfully entered the U.S. during the Biden administration and had a final order of removal. Homeland Security Investigations is leading the investigation with assistance from the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
The spokesperson confirmed that Garces Perez’s condition is stable and he remains in federal custody pending removal. The public will receive updates as more information becomes available.
