ICE Seeks Removal of Massachusetts Teacher Facing Child Rape Charges

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has announced plans to pursue the deportation of Patrick Akpore Nsumei, a 54-year-old high school teacher from Massachusetts, who faces multiple charges of child rape.

Following Nsumei’s arrest, ICE lodged an immigration detainer with the Lowell Police Department on July 22. The charges against him include aggravated rape of a child, rape of a child with force, and indecent assault and battery on a child under 14 years.

The spokesperson for ICE stated, “ICE will assume custody pending his criminal proceedings with the state.” The agency emphasized its focus on removing violent, dangerous offenders from the U.S.

Nsumei is being held without bail at the Billerica House of Correction. Lowell District Court Judge John Coffey deemed him a threat to public safety during a danger hearing on July 31, ordering him held for up to 120 days while the case advances.

Prosecutor Sheehan McCarthy informed the court that the alleged victim reported the abuse on June 27. The prosecution argues that the abuse occurred from 2017 to 2021, posing a continued danger to the community. Nsumei’s attorney, Thomas Mixon, contests these claims, citing a lack of physical evidence, as noted by The Boston Herald.

It was reported that Nsumei, formerly a science teacher at a Boston public high school, was no longer listed on the school’s staff webpage. The alleged victim is not tied to the Boston Public Schools district.

The district has not commented publicly on Nsumei’s employment status. Charges of aggravated rape of a child could lead to a life sentence, with parole eligibility after 10 years. Nsumei’s next court appearance is scheduled for September 1 for a probable cause hearing.

This case highlights ICE’s ongoing efforts under the Trump administration to deport migrants linked to serious criminal allegations. The agency targets cases with significant violent and sexual crime charges as part of its public safety mission.
