Ilhan Omar Wins Democratic Nomination for Reelection

Minnesota Congresswoman Ilhan Omar has secured the Democratic nomination for reelection in Tuesday’s primary, according to CBS News projections. Omar captured over 80% of the votes in the 5th Congressional District, a region she has represented in the U.S. House since 2018. This district stands as the most Democratic area in both Minnesota and the nation.

Omar faced competition from Julie T. Le, Abena McKenzie, Latonya Reeves, and Nate Schluter. Her focus continues to be on President Trump’s immigration policies. Notably, she won her previous general election by 50 percentage points and the 2024 primary by 13 points. This year, she did not encounter significant primary opposition, marking a first.

In the Republican primary for Omar’s seat, John Nagel emerged with 52.1% of the vote. Julie T. Le, a former U.S. attorney, entered the DFL primary shortly after a notable incident in a St. Paul federal court during Operation Metro Surge. Le, who faced 90 immigration cases in under a month, claimed she requested to be held in contempt for the chance to “get a full 24 hours of sleep,” highlighting her distress with the system.

Omar remains popular in her district, yet she frequently encounters criticism from Mr. Trump and his supporters. They have raised questions about her citizenship, mocked her Somali heritage, and scrutinized her and her husband Tim Mynett’s finances.

On Monday, Omar reported the presence of a Homeland Security investigator outside a town hall in Richfield. She expressed concern about the investigator’s presence in a mismatched vehicle and questioned the intentions behind it. In a previous incident in January, a man attacked Omar with a substance later identified as apple cider vinegar during a Minneapolis town hall.
