An illegal immigrant from Mexico with a history of deportations caused a fatal accident in North Carolina. The incident occurred on July 3 when Jaime Santiago Corona drove a Dodge Ram pickup truck and failed to stop at a stop sign. His vehicle struck an SUV driven by Kelli Toler, who was traveling with her two children in Pitt County, according to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol.
Toler and her 4-year-old child suffered serious injuries and were taken to ECU Health Greenville. Tragically, Toler’s 6-year-old daughter, Calli Toler, died at the scene.
Jaime Santiago Corona has been deported three times from the United States. The Department of Homeland Security stated that this tragedy was entirely preventable. DHS Acting Assistant Secretary Lauren Bis expressed condolences, stating, “This monster caused a car crash that killed a 6-year-old girl and injured a mother and a 4-year-old. Our prayers are with Calli Toler and her family.”
Corona faces charges including misdemeanor death by vehicle, failure to stop for a stop sign, careless and reckless driving, and driving with a revoked license. He has a history of illegal re-entry into the U.S., which constitutes a felony. His past offenses include driving under the influence, multiple counts of obstruction of police, failure to appear, and various traffic violations.
In response, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has issued a detainer hold. The Pitt County Sheriff’s Office assured Fox News of its cooperation with ICE.
