An illegal immigrant from Venezuela now faces accusations of murder after a judge in California released him on his own recognizance. Federal authorities are urging California’s Governor Gavin Newsom to hand over the suspect for deportation. The alleged murder occurred in a sanctuary city, just one day after the suspect’s release.
In another case, Isaac Melendez-Carranza, an illegal immigrant from El Salvador, was arrested for allegedly distributing fentanyl near a Virginia high school. He has faced a final deportation order since 2024. According to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), Melendez-Carranza was caught and released on bond at the Texas border in 2016.
On August 20, Melendez-Carranza was arrested and charged with distributing fentanyl within 1,000 feet of a school. He is being held at the Loudoun County Adult Detention Center without bond. DHS stated that on August 20, ICE placed a detainer on him after his arrest.
An immigration judge had issued a final order of removal for Melendez-Carranza on July 18, 2024. He was encountered in Sterling, Virginia, shortly after, but no action followed. DHS cited the Biden administration for the lack of subsequent action.
Melendez-Carranza initially entered the U.S. illegally via the Rio Grande and was arrested by U.S. Border Patrol in May 2016. He was later released on bond. Melendez-Carranza was identified by the Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office as a suspect linked to overdoses among Park View High School students in May.
During Melendez-Carranza’s arrest on August 20, authorities seized around 100 pills and about $1,000 in cash during a home search. Following suspected overdoses, several students were hospitalized in May. Loudoun County Public Schools confirmed two students experienced nonfatal overdoses during school hours, leading to further evaluations at hospitals.
Sheriff Mike Chapman expressed concern over the case due to the drugs reaching local students. He stated that once Melendez-Carranza’s charges are addressed, ICE will take custody. Chapman emphasized seriousness over Melendez-Carranza’s presence in the U.S., given his illegal entry nearly 10 years ago.
ICE’s detainer will lead Melendez-Carranza to federal immigration authorities once local charges are resolved. DHS noted that nearly 70% of ICE arrests target illegal aliens charged or convicted of crimes.
