Thousands of Indian protesters gathered on Monday to march on Parliament, demanding the resignation of the country’s education minister due to mismanaged entrance exams. These exams impacted millions of students. This protest is one of the largest in New Delhi in recent years, setting up a potential clash with the police, who have vowed to prevent unauthorized gatherings.
The protests intensified on Sunday after Sonam Wangchuk, a notable activist on a hunger strike for over 20 days, was forcibly taken by police and moved to a hospital for court-ordered medical care. His family and fellow protesters opposed this action.
On Monday morning, crowds gathered at Jantar Mantar, a designated protest spot in New Delhi. Although Mr. Wangchuk is still fasting at the hospital, his wife, Gitanjali J Angmo, stated that he hopes to attend the march. She has petitioned the court, calling her husband’s removal an illegal abduction.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government has not responded to the protesters’ demands. It has also warned against breaking the law. Many protesters joined after witnessing the government’s harsh treatment of Mr. Wangchuk. The administration’s lack of response has angered people across India, where some students have taken their lives due to the stress of exam mismanagement, as reported by Indian media.
