Growing Influence of Social Media Personalities at the US Open
The US Open is a major event attracting various influencers and celebrities. While their presence is part of the spectacle, it sometimes disrupts the matches. On a recent Monday night at Arthur Ashe Stadium, an incident perfectly illustrated the potential downsides. During a women’s singles match, actions in the audience caught significant attention.
As Naomi Osaka prepared to serve against Anastasia Zakharova, the game’s progress halted. Chair umpire Kader Nouni paused to address the audience disturbance. He requested that those causing the distraction promptly return to their seats, emphasizing the need to maintain the match’s flow.
“Guys, please, in the suite behind me, thank you guys, please take your seat.”
A viral TikTok video highlighted the issue with a woman using an intense light to capture content during the match. Another clip depicted influencers filming promotional content, reflecting their increasing involvement.
Efforts to Broaden US Open Coverage
The United States Tennis Association (USTA) has broadened media inclusivity at the US Open. They began accrediting content creators in 2025, starting with 54 individuals. This year, that number reached nearly 100. Jeanmarie Daly, USTA director of media operations, explained the media strategy.
“We realized we live in a world where traditional media and content creators reach different audiences in different ways. Our goal for the program was to have the broadest possible spectrum of coverage for the tournament.”
Despite disturbances, Osaka secured her opening victory against Zakharova in straight sets. The broadened coverage aims to reach varied audiences, demonstrating a shift in media approaches.
