Inglewood has witnessed turmoil due to allegations against the city’s mayor, James T. Butts Jr., who is accused of inappropriate conduct at a community event. Mayor Butts strongly denies these allegations, attributing them to political maneuvering.
During a news conference outside Inglewood City Hall, Butts addressed claims that he improperly touched a high school student during a group photo at the city’s “Votechella” event. He asserted that the allegations are part of a broader political conflict involving local activists and entertainment venue operators.
The student’s family has not publicly addressed the allegations. According to a family representative, legal advice suggested refraining from discussing the issue while the investigation proceeds, though details on the investigating body remain unclear.
In an emotional speech, Butts accused rivals of conducting a libelous and racist smear campaign, portraying him negatively due to his race. He highlighted the lack of any formal complaint from the alleged victim or her family, exiting the scene without taking questions.
Attention to the accusations emerged when political activists held a news conference on Thursday. Several attendees of Votechella described witnessing the student appear uncomfortable as Butts allegedly pulled her close during a photo opportunity. These witnesses remain anonymous due to safety concerns.
Najee Ali, a local activist, emphasized the importance of believing and protecting minors making such claims, advocating for accountability.
Mayor Butts announced his intention to issue cease-and-desist letters to Ali and other activists, accusing them of slanderous and defamatory actions. Butts identified political adversaries, including supporters of Measure BB, a local ballot measure linked to major entertainment venues, as part of the conflict. Measure BB aims to restrict commercial advertising that contributes significantly to the city’s revenue.
Inglewood has gained prominence as a sports and entertainment hub, hosting teams like the Rams, Chargers, and Clippers. Butts expressed pride for his tenure as mayor, during which he claims to have revitalized the city.
State Assemblymember Tina McKinnor, supporting Butts, highlighted the need for responsible handling of allegations during the election season, noting the absence of a police report or formal complaint from the involved parties.

Inglewood City Attorney Rick Olivarez stated no complaints have been received by his office regarding the incident. The Inglewood Unified School District’s administrator, James Morris, refrained from commenting on any investigation but assured protection for students involved.
Activist Najee Ali submitted a request for a criminal investigation against Butts at the L.A. County district attorney’s office. Ali, along with Hutchinson, described the alleged inappropriate conduct witnessed by several event attendees.
Yolanda Davidson expressed her ongoing concerns about Mayor Butts, citing a history of allegations against him, including previously dismissed lawsuits related to harassment and financial disputes.
