Investigation into Miami Amazon Cargo Plane Crash

3 weeks ago 0

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) provided updates on its investigation into an Amazon cargo plane crash at Miami International Airport. The accident involved the plane overshooting the runway and hitting two vehicles, resulting in five fatalities and multiple injuries.

Details of the Crash

Amazon Air Flight 7598, operated by 21 Air LLC, overran runway 30 after arriving from San Juan, Puerto Rico. It hit a Ford Econoline van and a Toyota Corolla Cross LE, traveling over 1,300 feet beyond the runway surface. The van was owned by Professional Ocean Service Corporation, a cleaning service contracted by airlines.

All five deceased victims were in these vehicles. Seven individuals were inside the Econoline van, which was located within airport premises, while the Toyota was outside. Authorities transported injured victims to nearby medical facilities, with three individuals in critical condition.

“Devastating, utter devastation,” described NTSB Chair Jennifer Homendy.

Witnesses reported seeing smoke and flames as they passed the site, and first responders were praised for their quick action.

Ongoing Investigation

The NTSB has retrieved the flight data and cockpit voice recorders for analysis. A team of 32 is currently handling the investigation, which includes recovery tasks such as fuel removal from the aircraft.

Further scrutiny will be directed toward several specialized areas, including airplane systems, air traffic control, and meteorological factors. The effectiveness of an Engineered Materials Arresting System (EMAS) at the runway ends will be a point of evaluation.

The relationship between Amazon and 21 Air will be reviewed, specifically focusing on contractual safety provisions. The aircraft’s history, manufactured in 1994, will also be analyzed.

Homendy emphasized the ongoing problem of runway excursions, citing over 3,000 investigations since 2008. Implementation of NTSB recommendations is crucial to preventing future instances.

Federal, state, and local officials have been thanked for their assistance, and condolences were extended to those affected by the tragedy.

The NTSB announced a subsequent briefing and invited the public to submit relevant media to [email protected] for further review.
