Investigation Underway After Discovery of Improperly Stored Bodies at Chicago Funeral Home

Authorities in Chicago are investigating South Chicago Chapel funeral home on the South Side after the discovery of more than 50 bodies improperly stored in various states of decomposition.

The situation came to light after local residents complained of a persistent “stench” from the funeral home. The Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office reported that state and local officials alerted them to the mishandling of bodies. Upon investigation, forensic pathologists found remains at different levels of decay.

“Staff is assessing the conditions of the remains, searching for documentation regarding identification of the decedents as well as death certificates,” the medical examiner’s office stated online. “This process could take several days to ensure proper disposition.”

State officials have suspended the license of a funeral home director, citing the presence of bodies in an unrefrigerated area under “deplorable conditions.” The Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation noted issues such as rodent and maggot infestations, contributing to the bodies’ decomposition.

No arrests or charges have been made yet, but Chicago police are investigating. State business records indicate that Johanna Morgan is the incorporated director of South Chicago Chapel Inc. Her license was temporarily suspended recently due to the practice posing “a danger to the public safety, interest and welfare.” She reportedly allowed multiple decedents to remain in unsuitable conditions, worsening their state.

The funeral home is run by Johanna Morgan and Clark Morgan, her husband. Clark’s license was revoked previously due to “unprofessional conduct” and practicing with an expired license. The pair previously managed a crematory also shut down for mishandling remains.

Latasha Johnson, 55, experienced the shock firsthand. Her mother’s funeral was conducted at the chapel shortly before authorities discovered the conditions. Johnson was informed that her mother’s body required an autopsy and that she needed to identify the remains soon.

“I’m discombobulated,” Johnson expressed. “My heart is broken.”
