Iran faces intense internal divisions while navigating tensions with the United States. Brig. Gen. Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, Iran’s lead negotiator, showed both defiance and a willingness for diplomacy.
On Wednesday, General Ghalibaf indicated that negotiations with the U.S. were still possible, despite recent military escalations. His statement emphasized Iran’s resolve to defend its interests through both military action and diplomatic negotiations.
Ghalibaf, considered a pragmatic conservative in Iranian politics, addressed the nation via state television following multiple American airstrikes. These strikes targeted military sites and critical infrastructure, causing widespread damage. Iran answered with ballistic missile and drone attacks on American bases in the Middle East.
The cease-fire between the two nations has ended. Both Iran and the U.S. declared a previous 14-point cease-fire agreement as void. Control over the Strait of Hormuz, essential for oil and gas shipping, has become a focal point. Iran announced its closure, while the U.S. has initiated a naval blockade along Iran’s southern shores.
Despite the escalating conflict, Ghalibaf expressed a need for coordination between military and diplomatic efforts. He stated, “We must fear neither war nor negotiations. War and negotiations are two methods of protecting the national interest.” He also stressed that engaging in negotiations does not equate to surrender.
