Hurricane Isaias has wreaked havoc across the Southeast, leaving over 438,000 residents without power in Florida. The severe storm resulted in significant damage, and in Mobile, Alabama, officials confirmed one storm-related death. Meteorologist Michael Estime from Fox Weather reported on the risks involved in the cleanup efforts. In Rosemary Beach, Kristin Scheurer described local flooding and downed power lines following the harsh weather conditions.
In the aftermath of Isaias, at least three individuals were arrested in Florida for taking advantage of the chaos. They are accused of car theft and looting. Escambia County Sheriff Chip Simmons revealed in a Facebook video that Dustin Kelley, 30, and Amanda Carr, 29, approached a woman, claiming they needed help charging their phone as they were working in the storm’s aftermath. After being let into the woman’s car, Kelley and Carr allegedly stole the vehicle.
A nearby deputy spotted the stolen car, pursued it, and apprehended the suspects after a crash where no serious injuries occurred. Kelley faced charges of larceny, fleeing or eluding police, and possession of marijuana, while Carr was also charged with larceny. Sheriff Simmons remarked on the arrests, showing a commitment to tackling such opportunistic crimes.
Moreover, another arrest was made when a man attempted to break into a 24-hour store by smashing a window while the power was out. The suspect, Van Gary Spikes Jr., was detained by officers on patrol. Spikes Jr. faces multiple charges, including possession of burglary tools, wearing a mask during a felony, attempted burglary during a state emergency, loitering, and criminal mischief.
Sheriff Simmons emphasized that law enforcement remains vigilant, successfully intercepting and handling these incidents. Adam Sabes from Fox News Digital contributed to this report, and further information or tips can be directed to him.
