Israeli Ambassador to the United Nations, Danny Danon, expressed concerns over New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s actions ahead of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s visit to the U.N. General Assembly. Danon accused Mamdani of creating disorder by encouraging protests during Netanyahu’s appearance at the general debate on September 24.
Danon stated, “No one can ignore Mayor Mamdani. Instead of welcoming world leaders and ensuring the city’s smooth functioning, he is inciting chaos.” He emphasized that the mayor’s actions would complicate lives for both New Yorkers and visitors. Despite this, Danon assured that Netanyahu would proceed with his visit and fulfill his representation of Israel.
Mamdani previously referred to Netanyahu as a “war criminal” and claimed he orchestrated “genocide against the Palestinian people.”
Mamdani’s office did not respond to requests for comments on potential meetings with Netanyahu. Danon remarked, “I don’t think the prime minister wants to meet with him.” During his mayoral campaign, Mamdani expressed a desire to arrest Netanyahu, although he acknowledged his inability to do so.
In a July press conference, Mamdani emphasized the importance of protest in New York City, stating, “One of the bedrocks of our city is protest.” He supported the right of New Yorkers to express themselves, regardless of their stance on various topics. Mamdani maintained that respecting the Constitution includes honoring the First Amendment, and New York City will always support free expression.
Netanyahu addressed the issue on Fox News, declaring his intent to visit New York. He criticized Mamdani for “pitting one group of New Yorkers against others.” Danon highlighted Israel’s long war efforts, mentioning forthcoming opportunities Netanyahu would discuss during his visit.
Danon stressed the need to address the situation in Gaza. He stated, “Hamas is still there. They are supposed to disarm according to the president’s plan. I hope it happens sooner rather than later. If not, we will have to do the job ourselves. There can be no future for the people of Gaza or Israel with Hamas in power.”
Reflecting on Israel’s actions over the past year, Danon added, “Israel is criticized, but we are proud at the U.N. We fought against evil, against Iran, Hezbollah, and Hamas. It wasn’t just our fight; we fought for western societies and democracies.”
