James Bell’s Dynamic Presence
Senior running back James Bell represents a major force for Simeon. With the football in hand, Bell thrives in the moment, driving the Wolverines forward without fear of mistakes or hits. His passion was evident in a recent game.
“I was born to do this,” Bell said. “I’ve been doing it ever since I was a kid. My running style tells you everything about the kind of player I am — aggressive, powerful and strong.”
In a decisive victory over Phillips, Bell rushed for 215 yards and scored five touchdowns on 11 carries. The game ended in a 60-0 win at Eckersall Stadium in Chicago. Sophomore receiver Jalonny Billingsley contributed with a 42-yard punt return touchdown and a 36-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Aki King, helping Simeon recover its winning form.
Bell’s Leadership and Influence
Corey Randolph, Boston College-bound senior lineman, underscores Bell’s leadership beyond his running abilities.
“His voice has weight about it,” Randolph said. “When he says something, it means something. He’s a dominant player on our team. He has great field vision and sees everything.”
Billingsley describes Bell as adaptable, serious on the field, and engaging off it, pointing out his leadership and skilled positioning.
“He’s a funny guy,” Billingsley noted. “When the game is on, he gets his work done. He has great footwork and knows how to bounce plays outside. He’s a true leader.”
Development and Prospects
Among the state’s top players, Bell stands as a notable prospect for the 2027 recruiting class, holding 16 Division I offers from colleges like Indiana, Miami, and Missouri. His father, former standout at Harper, inspired Bell’s career. The elder Bell instilled passion and drive, serving as Bell’s coach and mentor.
Adversity and Growth
Initially at Morgan Park, Bell faced early challenges, like a broken collarbone, before finding a home at Simeon.
“The move was tough and coming over here was a big change, but I just thought this was a better place for me,” he said.
Under coach Sinque Turner, Bell’s potential became clear. Turner commends Bell for playing beyond his years and supporting the team’s receiver dynamics.
Bell’s versatility also reflects off the field. From boxing and wrestling to fishing with family, Bell embraces diverse interests that enhance his skills.
A Broader Perspective
Bell values chess for strategic thinking, balancing introversion with sociability.
“I really like how chess makes you think,” he said. “I’m two different people. I’m quiet and keep to myself, but if I know you, I’m pretty outgoing and talkative.”
Coach Turner identifies Bell as a promising talent with broad potential, acknowledging his advancement in receiver and blocking roles.
“Baby James is everything as advertised,” Turner affirmed.
The season sees Bell emerging as a complete player, eager to expand his capabilities further.
