Cassandra Wilson, renowned jazz singer, songwriter, and producer, has died at the age of 70. Wilson, who won two Grammy Awards, passed away in Jackson, Mississippi, as confirmed by Hinds County Coroner Jeramiah Howard.
Time magazine once named her America’s best singer in 2001. Wilson’s unique vocal style transcended traditional jazz, incorporating elements of folk, pop, R&B, and country. Her powerful contralto voice was deeply rooted in her Southern heritage.
During a eulogy, musician Jon Batiste described her voice as capturing the essence of the South. Wilson’s family, friends, and manager were by her side during her final moments, as stated by her manager to jazz radio station WBGO.
From Jackson to the World
Wilson was born in Jackson, Mississippi, to musician Herman B. Fowlkes and teacher Mary Fowlkes. Her passion for music began as a child, influenced by Motown, Miles Davis, and Thelonious Monk. She started piano lessons at age six and later played clarinet in marching bands. While studying at Millsaps College and Jackson State University, she performed in coffeehouses and cover bands.
In the early 1980s, Wilson honed her craft under jazz legends in New Orleans. She then moved to New York City and joined the M-Base Collective, led by Steve Coleman, eventually becoming the group’s primary vocalist.
Her distinctive voice led to four Grammy nominations and two wins for Best Jazz Vocal Album: in 1997 for “New Moon Daughter” and in 2009 for “Loverly.” In 2015, Wilson performed at the Apollo Theater, celebrating blues singer Billie Holiday’s 100th birthday with a special concert. That year, she released “Coming Forth by Day,” a tribute to Holiday.
In 2022, Wilson received the prestigious title of National Endowment for the Arts Jazz Master, one of the highest accolades for jazz musicians in the U.S.
Tributes Pour In
Jon Batiste paid tribute on Instagram, highlighting her unique vocal tone and influence on various musical genres. He shared a 2009 clip of them together on Brazilian TV, reflecting on her impact.
Jackson Mayor John Horhn issued a statement, mourning the loss of a remarkable native daughter and noting Wilson’s global musical influence. Horhn emphasized her deep understanding of music’s power to move people and connect generations.
