Jerry Jones Supports Tony Romo Amid Recent Arrest

Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones has expressed his support for former quarterback Tony Romo following Romo’s recent arrest for operating a vehicle while intoxicated in Wisconsin. During an interview with KDFW Fox 4, Jones, who worked with Romo for 13 seasons in Dallas, shared that he has been in contact with the former player now turned broadcaster.

Romo’s arrest occurred on July 23, and he faces charges of operating while intoxicated, allegedly having an open container of alcohol in his vehicle, and executing an unsafe passing maneuver. Despite these allegations, Jones voiced confidence in Romo’s ability to handle the situation.

I love him. I love what he’s about. I love his character. I love his love of sport. And he’s a very unique talent, Jones said. Do you think Tony Romo knows how to get up when he gets knocked down? He had a life of that. And absolutely, that’s one of his greatest attributes, is that he can handle adversity. So this is something that he will work through.

Romo’s case has drawn attention within the NFL, particularly as training camps began last week and police bodycam footage surfaced. Romo, after playing in the Wisconsin Amateur Golf Championship, was stopped by police and claimed he had not consumed alcohol. He questioned the officers’ assumptions during the encounter.

The police noted Romo’s red, glassy eyes and reported an alcohol odor. Following his refusal to take a breath test during field sobriety tests, Romo reportedly mentioned advice from lawyers against such tests.

CBS Sports has since placed Romo on leave from his role as their top NFL analyst alongside Jim Nantz. J.J. Watt, former Houston Texans defensive end, will fill Romo’s position in the broadcast booth temporarily.

Romo began his role as CBS’ top NFL analyst on April 4, 2017, coinciding with his NFL retirement. During his career, Romo amassed 34,183 passing yards, 248 touchdowns, and 117 interceptions, completing 65.3% of his passes.
