On Sunday, the New York Jets were on the brink of achieving a 2-0 record for the first time since 2015. They controlled the game against the Green Bay Packers at MetLife Stadium until late errors cost them their lead.
The Packers overcame a 10-point deficit, scoring 13 straight points to claim a 20-17 victory in overtime. Trey Smack sealed the comeback with a 26-yard field goal.
Early in the game, Green Bay scored first with Jordan Love connecting to MarShawn Lloyd for a 6-yard touchdown. The Jets responded as Braelon Allen made a 5-yard touchdown run. New York’s Geno Smith later hit Garrett Wilson for another 5-yard score, taking a 14-7 lead.
In the fourth quarter, the Jets looked in control after recovering a fumble and adding a 32-yard field goal by Jason Sanders, stretching their advantage to 17-7. However, a 38-yard pass-interference penalty helped Green Bay set up a Christian Watson 3-yard touchdown catch. Skyy Moore further narrowed the gap with a punt return that set up Smack’s tying field goal.
The Jets had an opportunity to win in regulation but faced a critical fourth-and-1 at midfield. Coach Aaron Glenn opted to keep the offense on the field. Braelon Allen was stopped short, leading to overtime.
In overtime, the Jets struggled. Smith was sacked twice, and a false start left them needing to punt. Green Bay, aided by a penalty on Jarvis Brownlee Jr., moved into field goal range. Smack’s kick secured the win.
Throughout the game, penalties plagued both teams. Green Bay had 14 for 133 yards, while New York had 13 for 156 yards. Crucial mistakes cost the Jets the game, including the pivotal pass interference and unnecessary roughness penalties.
Smith completed 27-of-41 passes for 247 yards with one touchdown. Despite outgaining the Packers 285-199, holding them to 1-of-9 on third downs, and winning the turnover battle, the Jets couldn’t capitalize on their strong defensive showing.
The defeat left Jets fans leaving MetLife Stadium frustrated, wondering how a promising game slipped away.
